PhilosophyCenter | Overview

PhilosophyCenter | Stoic WisdomStoic Wisdom gives the student a proven way to rise above the conditions of life that seem to be causing suffering, while providing a forum for practice needed to apply this wisdom to whatever situation the student may be facing. This invaluable instruction, offered as an individual study with our founding director, is based on the teachings of the ancient Stoics—teachings that have never been more relevant or needed than they are today.

The Stoics knew that suffering comes from trying to control outer conditions, and from the misguided belief that our happiness depends on those conditions bending to our will, while in truth, happiness is the result of our taking charge of the one thing we can control—our reactions and responses to those conditions. The problem, then, is never the situation in which we find ourselves, but what we make of it, how we engage it, whether we react or respond, whether we resist our fate or meet it with equanimity and poise. In these terms, the Stoics certainly had feelings, but they did not allow their feelings to have them.

To love one's situation is to transcend it. To want what one has rather than perpetually chasing what one does not have is true wealth. To transcend the world and reaction to it is to claim tremendous personal power and presence. Adapting the inspired philosophy of the ancient Stoics to modern life, this remarkable study introduce an element of sanity to a world that sometimes seems intent on going mad.

Some of the topics covered in this remarkable study are:
  • fate and character
  • the gift hiding in adversity
  • the revising power of indifference
  • the futility of living willfully
  • transforming fate through transcendence
  • happiness is an inside job
  • the wisdom of ignorance
  • claiming "the good life"
  • taking refuge in humility
